Hebron

Following an agreement in 1997 between the Palestinian Liberation Organisation and Israel, Hebron was divided into two sections: H1 (80%) under the control of Palestinian Authority and H2 controlled by Israel.

Around 120,000 Palestinians live in H1, while around 35,000 Palestinians live in H2 along with around 800 Israeli settlers under heavy military protection.

Hebron settlements:

  • Kiryat Arba settlement: founded in 1968, around 8,000 settlers (the biggest of the settlements)
  • Givat Ha'avot settlement: around 1,000 settlers
  • Beit Hadassah settlement: founded in 1979, around 800 settlers
  • Beit Romano settlement: founded in 1982
  • Tel Rumeida settlement: founded in 1984
  • Avraham Avinu settlement: founded in 2000
